Inclusely

How Inclusely works

Inclusely is a Shopify accessibility app in early access. It checks every template of your store against WCAG 2.2 AA, saves the fixes you approve, gives you exact theme code changes, guides the tests a person must do, and keeps a dated record. It adds no widget to your storefront.

Scan every template

Your store may have thousands of pages, but they are built from a few templates. Inclusely checks one or two pages of each, on a desktop screen and on a phone.

The scan opens each page in a real browser. It presses Tab through the page, opens the menu, cart drawer and search, and checks that you can close them again with the Escape key.

It also reads every product in your catalogue through Shopify. So missing alt text (a short description of an image for people who cannot see it) is counted for all your products, not only the pages it opens.

Problems are grouped by the template that causes them. When the product template has a broken button, you see it once, with the number of pages it affects.

  • Password page, if your store has one

Every problem says who can fix it.

Each problem is tagged as your theme, your content, another app, or Shopify. Inclusely recognises about 30 common apps, such as review, chat and popup apps, so you know when the fix belongs to that app’s developer.

Fix store data and settings

Some fixes belong in your product data and theme settings. Inclusely suggests them, you approve them, and only then are they saved.

Alt text for product images

You get suggested alt text for each product image, in English and French. Review them in a grid, edit any you like, and approve. To see where a page stands today, try the free alt text checker.

  • Alt text you wrote yourself is left alone
  • Each batch can be undone
  • French goes into Shopify’s translations
Example: a batch of suggested alt text waiting for review

Colours in your theme settings

Faint text often comes from one colour in your theme settings. Inclusely checks every colour scheme, finds the nearest shade that is easy to read, and tells you where to change it in Online Store, Themes, Edit theme. You can test one pair now with the colour contrast checker.

Exact theme code changes you approve

For problems in your theme’s code you get the file, the line and the change, with a plain explanation.

sections/header.liquid- <button class="header__icon">+ <button class="header__icon"+ aria-label="{{ 'general.cart.title' | t }}">

The safe way to change theme code

  1. Duplicate your themeWork on a copy that shoppers cannot see.
  2. Apply the changePaste it yourself, send it to your developer, or ask ours.
  3. Preview and rescanInclusely checks the copy and confirms the problem is gone.
  4. PublishWhen you are happy, publish the copy as your live theme.

Rather not touch code? Inclusely is made by EVDEV, a Shopify agency in Toronto. Our developers can apply the changes on a copy of your theme, and every change goes into your record.

Checks a person has to do

Automated tests caught about 57% of issues by volume in Deque's 2021 study. The rest need someone to look, listen and judge.

Inclusely has eight short guided tests: buying with only a keyboard, buying with a phone screen reader, zooming in, filling in forms with mistakes, video captions, a spot check of alt text, popups and other apps, and French pages. Each one lists the steps and what a pass looks like. Results are saved with a name and a date.

In the app, the result is saved with the tester’s name and the date, and goes into your record.

Your evidence log

Every scan, fix, approval, undo and test is written down with the date and the person. Entries are only ever added, never edited.

Dated change log

Who did what, when, and what it looked like before. Here is why a dated fix record matters.

  1. Oct 14Added alt text to 212 product imagesApproved by Dana
  2. Oct 15Raised sale badge contrast to 5.2:1Theme setting
  3. Oct 16Rescan: 31 problems fixed, 4 leftAutomatic

Ready to share

  • A scan report for your developer.
  • An evidence report with the full timeline, for your lawyer or auditor.
  • An accessibility statement in English and French, written from your real results. Need one now? Use the free accessibility statement generator.
  • A feedback link in your footer, so shoppers can tell you about a problem.

Then it keeps watching

Stores change every week. At launch, every new product, page, theme publish and app will be checked as it appears, so a new problem is caught early.

You only get an alert when something gets worse: a new serious problem, or an old one that comes back.

What we never inject

Inclusely helps you find and fix problems and move toward WCAG 2.2 AA. It does not promise that your store meets any law, and it is not legal advice.

Small optional storefront fixes, off until you turn them on

A few problems can be patched on the storefront while the real fix is on its way. Together they weigh under 10 KB and show nothing to shoppers, except a skip link when someone presses Tab. Each one is listed in your report as temporary, next to the permanent fix.

  • Skip to content linkLets keyboard users jump past the menu.
  • Visible focus outlineIn a colour you pick, checked for at least 3:1 contrast.
  • Room for sticky headersStops a focused link from hiding under a sticky bar.
  • Reduced motionPauses known slideshows for shoppers who ask their device for less motion.
  • Pinch zoom back onRemoves theme code that blocks zooming on phones.
  • Missing button namesOnly on known themes, or with words you confirm.
  • Cart announcementsTells screen reader users when an item is added.

Questions about how it works

Does Inclusely add a script or widget to my store?

No, not by default. Inclusely changes your store's own data, settings and theme code, and only after you approve each change. Shoppers keep using their own screen reader or browser settings. A few small optional storefront fixes exist, and they stay off until you turn them on.

What does it change in my theme?

Colour settings you approve, and theme code changes you approve. Each code change shows the file, the line and the new code. It is applied on a copy of your theme first, so your live store does not change until you publish the copy.

Who applies theme code changes?

You do, your developer does, or our developers at EVDEV do. Every change goes into your record with the date and who made it.

Which checks need a person?

Automated tests caught about 57% of issues by volume in Deque's 2021 study of its own audits. Inclusely marks the rest and guides you through short tests, such as buying with only a keyboard, using a phone screen reader, zooming in and checking that alt text makes sense.

What is in the evidence log?

Every scan, fix, approval, undo and manual test, each with the date and the person. Entries are only ever added, never edited. You can export it as a PDF for your developer, your lawyer or an auditor.

Can I install Inclusely today?

Not yet. Inclusely is not in the Shopify App Store. It is in early access with a small group of stores, who get a free scan of their whole store and a call with our team to go through it.
