Free accessibility tools for Shopify stores
Seven free tools for store owners: an accessibility checker, an alt text checker, a colour contrast checker, an accessibility statement generator, and ADA, AODA and EAA checklists. No email needed. None of them can say a store is compliant, because part of WCAG always needs a person.
Accessibility checker
Paste the address of any page on your store. See images without alt text, buttons and links with no name, form fields with no label and more, each explained in plain words with who can fix it.
WCAG 2.2
Level AA rules a machine can test, run on one page in seconds. We do not save the address.
Check a pageAlt text checker
List every image on a page with its alt text, and find the ones that are missing, read like a file name or run too long. With a plain guide and examples.
Colour contrast checker
Check text, buttons and borders against WCAG AA and AAA, get the nearest colour that passes, or paste your theme colours to check every pair.
United States
ADA website checklist
Tick through the WCAG 2.2 AA checks that matter most on an online store: images, menus, forms, colour and checkout, with the Shopify admin steps. Your ticks stay in your browser.
Accessibility statement generator
An honest statement in English and Canadian French: your goal, what you do, what still needs work and how to reach you. Copy it as text or HTML, or download it.
Ontario
AODA checklist
The rules that apply at your size, the website requirement and what you need for the compliance report due December 31, 2026.
European Union
European Accessibility Act checklist
Whether the EAA applies to your store, the microenterprise exemption, EN 301 549 and what your accessibility information needs to say.
What a free tool can and cannot tell you.
The accessibility checker and the alt text checker read one page at a time. The contrast checker measures colours you give it. A statement says what you are working toward, and a checklist keeps track of what you have done. None of them can say that a store meets a law.
Automated tests find many of the problems on a typical page, but not all of them. Keyboard use, focus order and how a page reads with a screen reader still need a person to check.
